Salina, KS – On the evening of Saturday, September 21, 2024, JetBlue Flight 1189, operating from New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) to San Diego International Airport (SAN), made an emergency landing at Salina Regional Airport (SLN) after the flight crew received an alert indicating possible smoke in the cargo hold. The Airbus A320, carrying 146 passengers and crew, landed safely on Runway 17 at approximately 6:30 PM CST.

The Salina Airport Authority (SAA) promptly initiated an "Alert III" emergency protocol, activating its Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) team, alongside support from the Salina Fire Department. Passengers were safely deplaned onto the AvFlight Salina FBO and transported to the M.J. Kennedy Terminal via shuttle buses.

The alert, which initially indicated smoke in the cargo hold, prompted the crew to take precautionary measures and divert the flight to Salina. After landing, the aircraft was inspected by mechanics from 1 Vision Aviation, and no signs of smoke or fire were found. The alert was ultimately determined to be a false alarm.

While awaiting a replacement flight, JetBlue passengers were provided food, water, and other necessary amenities. The Salina Airport Authority staff, in collaboration with SkyWest ground crew, Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and AvFlight Salina FBO staff, worked tirelessly to ensure that all passengers were comfortable during the extended delay. According to one passenger’s account, staff went above and beyond, offering to purchase supplies for families with young children, organizing food for over 150 passengers, and addressing concerns swiftly and efficiently.

A JetBlue rescue flight arrived at Salina Regional Airport around 1:30 AM CST on Sunday, September 22, 2024. The replacement aircraft departed with the passengers at approximately 3:00 AM CST, continuing the flight to San Diego.

This incident underscores the dedication, professionalism, and quick response of the Salina Airport Authority staff, SkyWest ground crew, TSA and AvFlight Salina FBO personnel. The collaboration between these teams ensured that passengers were safe, supported, and well cared for throughout the ordeal.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is conducting a routine investigation into the incident.
